Budget Cuts
Gray and I both attend MTSU. I am pre-nursing and he is computer science. Because of major budget cuts from the state/fed government, MTSU is being forced to make about $20 million in budget cuts. They’ve been proposing several plans and the current plan is to cut/merge 40 something majors.
This is a huge deal and will impact the college very negatively. Not only do we have students who have paid thousands of dollars to get an education getting ripped off, this could affect the graduates of the programs being cut.
Here is the official MTSU report on the budget cuts.
My dad asked yesterday how this will affect Gray and I. It won’t effect nursing, from what I can tell, other than a few staff members being eliminated. However, Gray’s major will be merged with the math department. I know not many people understand computer science, but I can tell you it is NOT math. It is ridiculous to expect a math professor to teach computer science. It is an entirely different subject matter. Sure, you use some math/logic for computer science, but you are learning a new language, which a math professor can not teach unless they have training in that language.
This is just one example of a merger they are planning. If it’s not being cut, it’s being merged. They are planning to cut the majority of foreign language majors and the lower level physical education courses. These aren’t classes or majors that have no people in them. In fact, the physical education classes are very popular with the students, especially social dance, yoga, and pilates. Nearly every class I’ve ever taken has been full with a waiting list. The foreign language classes are actually a requirement if you are getting a Bachelor or Arts degree so it doesn’t make sense to cut them either.
Other areas they are trying to cut include the student newspaper, radio station, and publications run by the students. I have a degree in Journalism and I can tell you if they cut the newspaper, there is no point in getting a degree in journalism from the school. It is the only chance many of them will have to get real experience.
They are also considering cutting library hours to save money, which wouldn’t be so bad except that they are wanting to cut out Sunday entirely. If they wanted to cut a day, cut out Saturday. I’ll let you figure out why.
We’ll keep you updated on the whole process, I hope they don’t make a big mistake.
