Crime on Campus

by Becca

So, MTSU has been experiencing a wave of crime lately. A few days ago, a girl was pricked by a needle found in a vending machine. Then yesterday, a block from campus, a dumpster fire was put out, only to find a body in the remains. No clue yet as to who the guy was other than it was a white male. Also yesterday, another needle was found in another vending machine.

I don’t know how familiar everyone is with MTSU, but there has been a lot of crime in the past few years. When I went there as a freshman, crime happened, but it wasn’t reported. A few years ago a girl was attacked on campus in her dorm. She lived, but suffered some very traumatic injuries. Not long after that, a boy set fire in a dorm and called in “terrorist activities” and the school actually shut down because of it!

So we’ve had our fair share of crime and it usually comes in spurts. The dead body in the dumpster freaked me out because I drive by that apartment complex daily… it’s a block from the road I drive on to get to and from school. It’s scary to think that this act of violence was probably going on as I drove past. Also, it has made me realize that I am not as safe as I think I am. I go to work at 6am daily so I’m usually cautious, but I realize I need to be more cautious. Just a few days ago on Halloween, a girl was raped at a frat party by someone she knew. I know what precautions to take to keep my safe, but I need to remember to use those precautions!

A final note for today, “Remember remember the 5th of November.” :)
