Pet Plans to Ponder
We sold our chinchilla last night.
Don’t worry, he’s in a good home now with someone who will love him and take very good care of him.
There were a few reasons we decided to sell him. For one, he wasn’t even supposed to be there (no pet fee was paid), we want a cat or dog in the future (although Gray insists on cat only in our apt.) and there is no room or money for two animals now, I was tired of him and want a pet that will actually cuddle with me without trying to escape all the time.
The truth is, I’m a dog person. I think Sam put it best one time, “Dogs are needy.” I like that about dogs because now, that’s what I need. I need something that wants me to pet it or care for it. Simply put, I want a little Yorkie and I’ve wanted one for over two years now.
Gray agreed to an animal (although he mainly agreed to a cat) once we could afford the initial costs. We can afford the monthly costs, but of course there are usually huge initial costs and well, it’s much more important to have savings for emergencies and not use it on pets.
So here is the plan:
1. Save up for pet fee of $350.
2. Save up for initial costs which might include vet fees, bed, toys, water/food bowl, chew toys, and possibly a crate (I plan on crating a cat if we get one and obviously a dog). Initial costs will probably be $500-1000 depending on what we go with.
3. Decide on a cat or dog. Obviously I’d rather get a dog, but they are more work, cost more, and are more time-consuming so it would depend on several variables. A cat is more suitable for an apt., less needy, but still provides companionship.
We are aware of the commitment a cat or dog will bring us. I get tired of people telling me I won’t want to put that much work into a pet. OK, I get your point, but that doesn’t mean it applies to us. I hate being told I can’t/shouldn’t do something because it only makes me want to do that even more.
So anyways, the plan is that since we are taking the two vacations, once they are over, all extra money will go towards saving up for a pet. We will also be putting money into our actual savings, this is just the goal to work towards.
I feel pretty good about it and can already picture myself with either of these two darlings:

first off the puppy is wayyyy cute! but as you know (from reading my statuses on fb) cats are just as fun!! mine is almost two and still acts like he did when he was a kitten!! i even walk him on his leash lol! plus they don't need a lot of room!

@kaylee, That's a Yorkie puppy and the cuteness is what pulls me in every time. I mean, how can I say no to that face? lol
All of those reasons are why Gray is encouraging a cat over a dog, but I forgot to mention that the cat or dog would have to be spayed/neutered (not a big deal) but cats also have to be declawed to live here.

@kaylee, I thought I had already replied to this, oops!
Gray would probably kill me if I brought home a dog or a cat without his permission, hehe.

I used to be a dog person but obviously love cats now. Dogs are okay, but love my cat!

@Cathy: I love your cat too! Granted, he doesn't exactly give great hope to Gray liking cats, lol.

@kaylee, My mom did the same thing when I was little. We were visiting my cousins in Paris, TN and they breed chocolate labs, purebred. Well, apparently I asked if I could have one and my mom said sure. I think she might have called my dad to warn him though, not sure. My dad will only takes on purebred dogs, so that's why I got to keep her, although she was the runt of the litter and had many health issues.
I think guys claim they don't like pets but I'm pretty sure they all have a soft spot for them.
Gah, no cats. ESPECIALLY in an apartment. While a puppy may sometimes have an accident if a cat gets territorial, it will SPRAY, which not only ruins carpet, it ruins walls and floor boards, too. You can't get the smell out. GOD and don't get me started on a cat/litter box in an apartment. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.
That doesn't mean I don't think cats aren't cute. They most certainly are but I would never own them. :p

@Mel, We know about the spraying, dogs do it as well.
Cats are just easier in an apt. because of the obvious litter box and not needing exercise like dogs do.
I'd still rather have a puppy, but I'm OK with either.
