Twilight saga: New Moon

by Becca

NEW MOON.

So, if you’ve been around me at all, you know that I’m NOT a fan of Jacob in the Twilight books. I viewed him as competition for Edward and really, it’s the fact that I would have chosen Edward for me (as well as Bella) so i didn’t like him. I felt he was too young and immature, even after the change I still saw it.

Trina and I went to the theater yesterday to catch a matinee.

I ran up to the door only to find out the first four showings were all sold out. Bummer. The irony in this is that I didn’t check to see if they were sold out first. So we bought tickets to the 4:30 showing and I went with Trina to do her grocery shopping and then came back.

We both got popcorn and Trina gave in to a drink for the collector’s cup. We waited in line for probably a hour and a half and they had us roped off. Trina had gone to the midnight premiere and said it had been chaos. Let’s just say, they have 16 screens and ALL 16 screens were sold out for the midnight premiere, INSANE!

When the let us in, I ran in and we got pretty good seats. I have to say the crowd did not disappoint. Part of the lure of a midnight showing is that the fans are actually into the movie and have good interaction. The people sitting beside of us were definitely doing that and at one point Trina heard someone yell “Cheater” when Bella and Jacob almost kissed.

Next summer I WILL be going to midnight showing and I will again for Breaking Dawn. I will say that I do like Jacob better in the movies, it reminded me that I didn’t completely start hating him until Eclipse and so we’ll see what happens in that movie for me.

Overall, I think this movie was great!

On a side note, some people are really NOT into this series at all. One of my friends on facebook actually threatened to de-friend the next person who posted about New Moon and apparently she kept her word. I think that if it bothers you that much, just ignore it, unless you REALLY don’t like your friend anymore because of it.

Movie Recomendations

by Becca

So I watch a lot of movies. A LOT of movies. We have Netflix and I take full advantage of it every month. I usually get in at least two rentals a week. That’s at least 8 movies a month. For only $15. So yeah, great deals! I also take advantage of the instant viewing online.

The point being, I’m going to share with you some of my recent favorites.

Songcatcher was a movie recommended to me by a college professor. With my first degree I minored in American Music and had to take a class in American Music. This movie came up because we talked about old ballads that came over and stayed alive via oral tradition.

Gray watched this with me and we were both delighted by the music. Not only is there a shining young star to be (Emmy Rossum pre-Phantom of the Opera) but the story line is refreshing. I enjoyed every minute of the movie.

The Ugly Truth is not in my genre of movies I typically like, but it starred Katherine Heigl who is one of my favorite actresses, so I gave it a shot. I was not disappointed! Heigl plays a television news producer who has trouble hooking guys because of her type A personality (Hello SELF!). Along comes a guy (Gerald Butler) who is pretty much the opposite of her “type” to show her how to successfully hook a guy and keep him.

As I said, it’s not my typical movie, but I really enjoyed it despite that.

Today I will be watching New Moon so hopefully I will have a review of that up in the next day or two!

MJ and other such things… like Steve McNair

by Becca

Something came to me the other day as I was thinking about Michael Jackson and Steve McNair’s recent deaths. There are two sides to their deaths, the “Oh how sad, what a legend” and the “What a horrible man, he deserved what he got!”

I personally was sad to hear about both deaths. I am a big fan of Michael Jackson’s earlier music and he was a musical genius. Did he had issues, sure, don’t we all? I just think that in this time, we really shouldn’t be worrying about what he did or did not do. We all have baggage in our lives and personally, if when I die people bring up some of mine, I’m pretty sure it’s not going to be fun for my family or friends. It’s hard enough for their families to be losing them, and having to deal with people whining about their pasts.

I did not watch either memorial/funeral but my mom did and said that she particularly enjoyed the eulogy given at McNair’s. Basically, the preacher reminded everyone to not judge McNair’s past failures because we all have our own. Yes, he was in a spotlight and I’m sure he realized his actions would be over the news if heard. However, in a time of mourning, I’m pretty sure his wife and kids would tell us he was a good guy and would want to remember him for the good times.

So that is my point of view. I’m not blind to the fact that both men have huge allegations against them, I just think that it does no good to keep bringing them up when they are both deceased. What good does it actually do?

Just call my name and I'll be there

by Becca

Today my heart feels stretched. Yesterday was a day that will live on forever as the day we lost two pop culture icons. When the news of Michael Jackson’s death surfaced I felt it had to be a joke… TMZ is not a reliable news source for information. Then reliable sources started to confirm the news and I suddenly felt very sad. I was actually watching the news and they were talking about Farrah’s life when they interrupted with the news of MJ’s death. MJ’s death is like my generation’s Elvis and I think we’re all a bit numb to the thought.

Yesterday wasn’t very different from any other day. I went to work, I studied in class, and then I came home and expected that the day would end with nothing else of significance happening. We watched two movies yesterday: “Confessions of a Shopaholic” and “Airplane!” both of which were good movies, Gray even enjoy the first!

This morning I’ve been watching “Phoebe in Wonderland” which I also highly recommend because it has been a great drama movie and not too depressing. I think it has also helped me realize that even with these deaths, the world will go on, it always does. It’s more important to enjoy your life and not waste it than to mope through each day. Everytime I think of something I want or desire, I try to realize that I currently have everything I need. It’s been helping my overwhelming desire to have a house or the latest gadgets.

I’m reaching a place where I can’t control my life and although I hate the thought of that, I know it’s for my best interests.

I urge you to examine your own life and see where you’ve become trapped. When you let go of what you desire, sometimes you actually get it, and if you don’t, well maybe it was for the best.

Twilight

by Becca

So, yesterday afternoon Trina, Jami, and I went to see Twilight together. Jami works with Trina at Lifeway and it was the first time we’ve met in person. It’s nice to put a face and voice with a person who you hear about all the time. :)

We were totally there early, hoping it wouldn’t be a packed showing. We saw Sex and the City and Made of Honor at matinee showings and the SATC one was PACKED. We got there early enough to get seats, but it was practically full. We ended up splitting up in the movie theater to watch it.

So, we were prepared and had no clue what it would be like, we just wanted good seats! We ended up with great seats and it did fill up last minute. The movie was so much better than I was expecting it to be. I read all the books, but sometimes movies suck compared to the books. It seemed like a low budget movie, but in my opinion, that made it better. The books are so weird anyway, it’s hard to put them in a movie format. We were totally laughing the first half of the movie. Some actors had WEIRD facial expressions and since we know everything that happens, we laughed a LOT. I’m sure the people near us were thinking Why are those girls laughing so much? This is not that funny.

Trina mentioned not bringing out a camera so I pulled mine out. I was totally planning on documenting my experience for this blog post. After all, this blogging every day for a month deal gets boring after a while without a good story and pictures. :)

Hanging Out

I tried to take a picture and they totally thought I was cutting Jami out. Pshh, I know my camera better than that!

Squish together

Trina thought it was weird that I got so close to her, but I could tell that I wouldn’t be in the picture otherwise and SEE, I was RIGHT!

Jami

This is Jami, my new friend.

We probably should have gotten our pictures taken in front of the movie poster. Oh well. After it was over, we talked for a bit about the movie and we all agreed it was a good take of the books. It looks as though New Moon has been approved so we’ll have another movie to obsess over.

In the meantime, I need to get back to my life and finish my own novel.

World Class Drummer

by Becca

Last night Gray and I ran to Wal-mart to buy some eggnog. We also walked around through Clearance items to see if there were any good Christmas presents.

Gray and I own a Wii and we own Guitar Hero. So naturally, we headed over to electronic to try out the new Guitar Hero game that now includes drums.

Have I mentioned I have no rhythm? I can do the guitar thing, but the drums, HAHA, NO!

I wish we had videotaped my performance, because it was class A bad… and I had people watching me. It was rather embarrassing.

So we’ve now tried out Rock Band 2 and the new Guitar Hero game. Both games have drums, guitars, and vocals. We’re trying to figure out which would be a better expansion for our Wii system. Obviously, we already own Guitar Hero, so buying the new game would be easier, but it has nothing to do with the older game. The only plus for us is that we already have one guitar so we’d either be gaining another guitar or the drums. Plus, Rock Band 2 has a lot more songs.

I have no idea what we’ll do and it’s a long way away from coming home with us. We still have priorities like bills and debt.

I’m sorry that all I can post about is a gaming system. It’s raining today and raining makes me sad and grumpy. I’m also grumpy because I have to write for NaNoWriMo today and I don’t really feel like doing it.

Sigh. What do you not feel like doing today?
