New Year’s Eve

Our New Year’s Eve was not at all what we originally planned, but that’s okay because it turned out better.

Friday night Gray’s mom Cathy called to invite us down to Jackson for a family get together on Saturday afternoon. It turned out his (Gray) brother Taylor and fiance Liz were coming home early, so we decided to go ahead and make the trip back to West Tennessee, just a few days after coming home from said area.

So we loaded up the new car and headed off. After a slight detour at Chic-fil-a and Starbucks, we were on our way!

We arrived at our destination with a few minutes to spare. It was great to see the family from Florida and we saw some relatives of Gray’s whom we had not seen since our wedding, close to 4 years ago!

After lunch, Gray and I showed off the new car before playing a round of Catch Phrase with the cousins. Team Liz Ruth, Sean/Jenny, and Becca FTW!

After a little more fun, it was time for us to head home. The drive home seemed shorter than usual, and we arrived back at around five.

Of course, we didn’t really have much food so I suggested Wendy’s, but first, we HAD to find black eyed peas.

Well, the Target in on Old Hickory did not have black eyed peas OR decent jalapeno chips. What? You don’t eat those for New Year’s? haha

A stop at the Neighborhood Wal-mart and we had the peas as well as GOOD jalapeno chips. What? I’m obsessed.

So we came back home and I don’t recall doing much. I tried to watch the New Year’s eve stuff on television, but I grew sleepy and I fell asleep by 11:30, no joke.

Year in Review: 2011

Another year has gone by, and let’s see how it turned out.

January: Well, I started our with some resolutions about this year, and we can’t forget my first stint with jury duty. I start my second semester of nursing school and learned how to give shots and catheterize people. I ended the month with a trip ice skating with Trina and Kody, and would you know that was my first time?

In February I confessed my love for all things Bones, which is going strong today. I completed an accent vlog that has spread like wildfire around the web. We had our first school shooting and I broke it up into two days.

Along came March and I was still talking about that shooting. Sadly, this was the semester for violence at MTSU and one of our star basketball players was stabbed to death in her apartment. Tragedy kept striking as I awoke to news of the Tsunami in Japan, worrying for my friend Teresa’s safety. She was fortunate, her entire family was safe, although they lost their homes. I battled with being content with our current living situation, but trusted God would provide.

Of course, April brought showers and change. While I forgot to post about Gray’s birthday, I did post about his upcoming graduation. Trina turned 26 and I finished my first round of nursing school clinicals. I struggled with the thought of failing Pharamcology, but hoped for the best.

May showed up with so much good. Gray graduated with a job offer, I passed Pharmacology, Trina got engaged, Taylor got engaged, we celebrated 3 years of marriage, and we adopted Bellatrix. To counteract all that good the cicadas invaded Tennessee.

June wasn’t as exciting as May, but there was fun wedding planning to be done, including ordering my first bridesmaid dress! I was able to share the joy of Trina trying on her first wedding dresses and watched her buy the dress. I talked about my newfound love of makeup and the choices I’d like to make when I give birth. I also pledged to read a lot that summer, indicating a huge pile of books I’d accomplish in demolishing. Sadly, most of those haven’t been read yet. All the reading reminded me of the summer reading programs I used to do as a kid. Gray’s car started giving us problem and the beginning of the end was in sight. I ended the month blogging about birthdays and family vacations.

July is always a blast (not pun intended) and this year we went to downtown Nashville with Kody and Trina to watch the fireworks! July is my birthday month, so I decided to follow after Trina and make a year of goals. I blogged about the final Harry Potter movie and why it meant so much. After a year of eating gluten-free, I discovered my problem was actually acid. After a round of medication, I haven’t had any problems, so it might have actually been a stomach ulcer. On my 26th birthday, I sang for you guys! I ended the month on a great note, because my jury duty was over!

I’ve mentioned before I’m pretty spontaneous sometimes and we made the move to Nashville in August! I blogged about what being a bridesmaid means to me and finally, we were settled in the new apartment.

September came and I was once again in school. As part of my bridesmaid duties, I helped to plan Trina’s bachelorette party and a few weeks later, watched my best friend tie the knot.

Nursing school was harsh in October and I ultimately had to make a decision. However, Halloween was a welcome distraction!

November brought with it NaBloPoMo, and I posted every day. First off, I recapped Halloween at Trina and Kody’s house. We put up our Christmas tree super early so Bellatrix would get used to the tree. Gray and I celebrated 3.5 years of marriage by visiting the Parthenon in Nashville. My Aunt Hattie went to be with her Lord and Savior and I got a little crafty. Trina and I went to see Breaking Dawn: Part One in theaters! I finished up my OB rotation and wondered if that’s what I really want to do. We went home for Thanksgiving and I got really into Pinterest. Bellatrix was about to turn a year old and I finished the month by telling the story of how Gray proposed to me.

December changed a lot. I revealed my decision to repeat Med-Surg in the spring. I enjoyed the Christmas season by doing a series of 25 Days of Christmas, featuring my top 25 Christmas movies. We sent out pretty Christmas cards and celebrated Christmas with our families. Gray ended his first job, and starts with new job on January 3rd. We bought a new car, and are happy to end the year on a good note!

Christmas with the Sanborns

We just got home from Christmas with our families, so I thought I’d share a recap while I could remember the details.

We left Friday afternoon after Gray’s last day of work. Did I mention that small detail on here yet? Gray starts a new job on the 3rd of January, so Friday was his last day. We dropped Bella off at the vet and headed to McEwen.

While I could never enjoy living there, I enjoy the visit because there is not much to do. I’m not entirely sure what all we did accomplish, other than convincing my parents to finally upgraded their cell phones to smart phones, the old phones were 5-7 years old!

Sunday morning we had my siblings over for Christmas. I love hanging out with my family, and this time around we got to meet Woof, my sister’s new daschund! They’ve had Woof for a few months, but we never saw them at Thanksgiving, so it was time to meet my new nephew.

After we shared gifts and took a family picture, it was time for Gray and I to head to the Jackson area for Christmas number two. When we arrived at Gray’s aunt and uncle’s house, I immediately found the food. There is nothing like turkey, and I enjoy it this time of the year. After some more hanging out, it was present time. Cathy and Gray had brought our gifts with them, so we just opened everything there. I ended up with some fun stuff, which I’ll share below, and a few neat surprises.

We packed up and headed to Memphis and I don’t remember doing much the rest of the day.

The day after Christmas, Cathy and I headed out to do some shopping while Grady and Gray went to the Mazda dealership. I’m sure you can guess where this is going.

Cathy wanted to return her kindle cover she got, because it didn’t fit her kindle, the kindle touch. I wanted to purchase a kindle with my Christmas money, so I did. Best Buy was the location where Grady bought hers, and they happened to have one kindle touch 3G left, and it is mine. I had just enough money leftover to purchase a kindle cover, so we went to a nearby Target. It took us probably 15 minutes to find the perfect covers. We’re not girlie girls, and so a plain, black cover suited us both just fine.

I had just enough money (with a little help from Gray) to finally purchase a nice set of Sigma makeup brushes. I used them recently and they are worth EVERY PENNY. Seriously, I love them. I was lucky enough to get some other wonderful things for Christmas as well including: a baking mat, the board/card game Pit, some pajamas, a scarf, Starbucks/Amazon gift cards, a book, homemade necklace, and probably some other stuff I’m forgetting.

Our joints gifts were some jam, bird salt and pepper shakers, a gift card, some artwork/poem from my niece and nephew, ice cream bowls/spoons, and some other stuff I’m probably forgetting.

Gray did pretty good for Christmas. I can’t tell you much of what he got by name, but it was a lot of stuff for either his gun or the new car. Did I mention we got a new car?!

Gray and I had been looking to buy a new car for a month or two now, but until he got the new job, we couldn’t afford a car payment. We had researched and new we’d probably want a Mazda 3, and when they went to the dealership to get something fixed on Grady’s car, Gray got to test drive the car and got an offer of a good price. The interest rate was pretty good, and we got a great deal, so I ended up test driving the car, and we bought it that day.

Yes, we are spontaneous, but usually we’ve thought out what we want ahead of time, it just seems spontaneous because we don’t’ talk it out with others first.

The rest of the stay was nice and enjoyable, getting to hang out with Caleb’s girlfriend Kassie and I’ve been reading up a storm. Unfortunately, I requested 10 e-books from the library and they’ve all come available at the same time. I know, first world problems. My goal is to read as much as possible, but thankfully I just realized that I get an extra week off from school because I only have a Monday class and the first Monday is a holiday.

We’re back home now, and it’s nice to just lay around and read. I absolutely love to read, so the kindle is the perfect gift to give myself. Now I just need to learn to balance my time reading and everything else!

The Proposal

I am not sure why, but it seems fitting that the last post of November is the story of how Gray proposed to me. I’ve wanted to write our story for some time, and I feel like this is a good place to start.

I remember the majority of this day pretty well. I know it was our one year anniversary of dating, January 14, 2007. I remember I lived in Lyon Hall on the MTSU campus, where I worked as a Resident Assistant. Gray was working as a RA in Cummings Hall so we spent most of that weekend apart, it was check-in weekend for the spring semester.

I had previously asked for permission to go to a meeting for a campus organization I was a leader in, Campus Crusade for Christ or Cru as it is now known. In order to go, my boss said I needed to work some extra shifts for the check-in weekend. I must add here that at that time, he didn’t know, but later he did and really confused me. I remember telling him that I was going to work something extra, and he told me not to worry about it. I argued (because, I am ME, heh) and he told my again, not to worry about working.

This didn’t raise any suspicion at all. I am totally a great detective.

So the time came for the meeting and Gray picked me up. It was a Sunday night and we drove over to Jenny’s house. She was a leader for the organization, working for the full-time and she lived near campus.

I vaguely recall talking to some people at the meeting. I remember Lory and Faith or Grace being there and asking me some questions. I also remember that I grabbed a cooking and was eating it, happening to be standing alone at the time.

That’s when Jenny came up to me and said, “Gray’s not feeling very well, why don’t you go check on him on the porch.”

I immediately worried about Gray’s wellbeing, thinking to myself that Gray never gets sick, so it must be bad… then everything clicked in my head. I realized I was about to be proposed to.

I was shaking when I opened her back door and say Gray standing there, totally NOT looking sick at all. The details are fuzzy, but he did get down on one knee and propose to me. I remember telling him that he, “Got me good.” I remember taking the ring and feeling in shock… a feeling that lasted for several hours. I kept thinking, “Is this really happening?” I am thankful that I had told him before that I want pictures taken when we got engaged, and so we have some wonderful pictures of the moment.

So, now we’re married and have a cat. I’m hoping to add more to this and expand on the dating years, and maybe some of the first few years of marriage, as well.

Happy (almost) birthday, Bellatrix

Bellatrix is almost considered an adult cat, not just a kitten. She will turn a year old in just over a week on December 7th!

She certainly is a sweet cat, although Gray would probably argue and say she’s an evil cat. heh.

I’ve really enjoyed this step into pet ownership. While some may argue, I know she is preparing us both for the future with children. No, it’s not the same, but we’re still learning more responsibility than we had previously.

Bella is a quirky cat. She currently enjoys licking everything, include your feet, the bathtub, and toilet paper. Yes, our cat licks the toilet paper rather than scratching it, go figure.

We’ve discovered the joy of the witching hour, which is where the cat runs around making a strange noise and bouncing off the walls. This behavior comes out or nowhere and we don’t give her catnip on a regular basis, so I’m not sure what causes it. She hasn’t done anything too strange during this time, but twice now she has knocked some food/drink out of my hand. Hot coffee all over your pants is not fun, personal experience.

I’m to the point where I can remember life before her, but I really don’t want to imagine life without her. We were gone for a few days during Thanksgiving and she stayed at the vet. I missed her terribly and picked her up first thing Monday morning in the cold rain. She was as happy to see me as I was to see her.

I never thought I’d be a cat person, but I just can’t imagine life without a cat, and I know we got lucky with her.

Oh Bella, you make life better.

We’re in my hometown for this rest of this weekend. Over a week ago I went home for my aunt Hattie’s funeral and I was reminded of how awesomely big my family is… my mom was 1 of 10 and my dad was 1 of 8. I always meet new relatives at funerals and reunions.

Anyways, I’m looking forward to spending some quality time with my family and probably (unfortunately) studying some as well. Thankful I have the opportunity to go home and spend some time with them.

You know, my hometown is pretty small, but we have some nice traditions. I enjoy Christmas because I know the little Christmas decorations will be up on the street lamps. I loved Thanksgiving at my aunt Sue’s house, which I will sadly miss this year.

Thanksgiving

Today our country gives thanks, and here is my list.

Salvation. I’m thankful that Jesus came and died on the cross for me. What sweeter gift is there?
My Husband. I’m thankful for everything Gray does to provide for us as a family. He’s pretty awesome.
Bellatrix. I get so attached to my animals, and I love my kitty.
Family. I love both of our families and the support they show us.
Friends. Some of our friends are family too, and they are the best friends, ever.
You guys. I’m thankful someone reads this blog.
Life. I’m thankful to be alive, and grateful for the chance to live this life.

Oh Christmas Tree

Last night I plugged in our Christmas tree, just to see what Bella would do…

Can you spot the Bellatrix?

I haven’t turned the tree on much because I don’t want to babysit the cat and keep her from chewing on the *bright lights*.

I do have to say that the tree looks pretty just lit up, without the ornaments. Considering that the cat has attacked it every day the past few weeks, it’s doing pretty good.

What are your tips for tying on the ornaments? Picture hanging wire?
