The End of November

by Becca

So I made it through another year of posting every day in November. It was a lot easier this year, probably because I wrote a lot of drafts to remember things to blog about. I also scheduled some posts ahead of time due to the holidays.

There is more to write about coming soon as today I am getting dose two of the varicella (chicken pox) vaccine. Ugh.

This week is full of a lot to do and let’s face it, the end of the semester is usually pretty insane.

Here’s hoping I can make it through the next three (?) weeks until Christmas break!

It’s the MOST Wonderful Time of the Year!

by Becca

So, first things first…
Photo 13
My glasses arrived Friday. They are progressive lenses made specifically for my eyes to adjust to different focal points. Basically, I will be able to read up close, medium, and distantly by looking through the lenses in different ways.

Our tree is up and decorated! No presents are under it yet because I’m an exhausted human being right now. We went shopping yesterday and bought ALL of the gifts (minus our gifts to each other). It made for a cranky Gray and Becca but we survived.

I am so happy the tree is up because now officially beings my favorite time of the year!.

Thanksgiving Dinners

by Becca

Phew, I don’t even know where to begin.

Wednesday night, Gray and I left Murfreesboro at around 5:30 and took HWY 96 through Franklin and all the way to 40W in Dickson. We did this because traffic is usually insane and awful in Nashville at rush hour and if you combine that with Thanksgiving, it’s just worse.

We actually made it in about two hours, pretty good if you ask me. The next morning we drove to Memphis with my parents and had Thanksgiving lunch with Gray’s family. The rest of the day included shooting a BB gun, watching The Blind Side at the theater (AWESOME movie, especially since it takes place in Memphis at the school (under a different name) that Cathy went to, pretty cool!), came home and had leftovers, and then finished the night by watching Star Trek, which was also good.

This morning(Friday) we drove back to McEwen and went to my aunt’s for lunch and now I’m playing catch up on ALL the gazzilion emails and such that I got over the past two days.

I’ve been kind of cranky the past few days and I’m sure there is a reason behind it, but I’m just not sure. Regardless, I am still thankful for the time with my family.

Finally, tomorrow we drive back and I finally get my glasses, woohoo!

P.S. – I think I might actually be in love with Eric from True Blood, but in a fictional way of course. :)

It’s a Love Story

by Becca

So, I was listening to Taylor Swift’s “You Belong with Me” and decided to look up and watch the music video. You know, the music video that won her an award where Kanye decided to be a douche. Yeah, that one.

This video made me cry (at the library none-the-less) and I started thinking about why.

You see, women are fed a lot of crap by the media. We’re told we should be perfectly skinny, great hair and makeup, and of course, land the man of our dreams.

After watching that video, a little part of my heart cried out for a love like that. Seriously.

Now I am happily married to a great man, but even I still fall victim to these thoughts. You know, the ones when you watch a great romance where the couple are happily ever after in love? Well, when I was done with this music video, I began to remind myself that although they seem all happily ever after in love, that’s where it cuts off. They don’t show the bad moments, the ones where they probably fought a lot about petty little issues.

See, I do have that happily ever after in love with Gray, but it’s not without other issues. That’s just called being a human.

I guess what I’m trying to say, is that it is SO easy to get caught up in a perfect love story that you forget to remember that it’s not real or realistic at all. Yes, you CAN have a great love story, but it’s not going to be without some kind of hurt. We watch these perfect love stories and then feel unsatisfied when our own lives go off rail. “Why can’t my life be like that?” Because it’s not real.

When I look back on 2008, the year I got married, I remember thinking that the entire year just plain sucked. Getting married did not pull me out of a funk that is called trying to find a job in a lousy economy. It did not save me from the fact that I thought marriage would be an easy ride without hardships. OK, so I knew there would be hardships, but it’s like I would forgot about that until I hit a bump.

The point being is that marriage did not make me any happier. It didn’t solve any of my problems. It gave me a lot, that is for sure, because my husband is pretty awesome, but he’s not without faults. I am not without faults.

When I watch movies like Pride and Prejudice I get sucked into all the romance and just wish Gray would be a little more like Mr. Darcy. It’s not fair to Gray at all.

Just some observances from my own marriage and thoughts. I do like a good romance story, but a lot of them are just female porn, making us believe love is a certain perfect way, when it’s not.

Thanksgiving

by Becca

Today is Thanksgiving. Gray and I are traveling with my parents to visit Gray’s family in Memphis. I thought it would be a good idea to share what I am thankful for:
1. Salvation: That I know where I will be when I die.
2. My Husband: Because sometimes he’s the only thing that keeps me from jumping out of windows.
3. My family: They are all a gift to me in some way. I was blessed with a massive family and it just got a little bit bigger now that I am a Sanborn. :)
4. My friends: There are a few that stand out to me: Trina, Rachel, Sam, Lory, Kelsey… and then my new nursing friends… it’s going to be a long year!
5. My church: We’ve been blessed with a wonderful community group and great church family. I am thankful for my mentor Molly who has been such an encouragement!
6. My job: I get to work on campus and get paid a lot of money for not doing a whole lot. I am thankful because it pays as much as working a minimum wage job but I only work 20 hours a week, great for a student!
7. Nursing school: I am so thankful I got into nursing school!
8. Working vehicles: I am thankful we have a way to get around.
9. Technlology: Without it I wouldn’t have a job!
10. You: Thank you so much for reading our blog!

Weekly weigh in: week 4 of November

by Becca

Last week I was 144.6 and this week I am down a pound at 143.6!

I noticed this week that I was in the 143s and it made me happy because my body loves to hang in the 144s for some reason. I’m sure all of that will change because of Thanksgiving but I have the weekend to recover from all the awesome food. :)

There will be a post coming soon all about pilates class. I can’t believe that the end of the month is so close.

Safe traveling for Thanksgiing everyone!

Titans football

by Becca

So this is being written as I watch the game and right now, we’re losing 0 to 7. I’m pretty bored and probably going to bed to read instead of watching. I now, I’m not a good fan sometimes, but games played at night start entirely too late and go past my bedtime. I’d rather not watch the train wreck that I think is coming, happen.

All I have to say is that there is only 1 day left until I will be at home in McEwen, fully ready to take on two Thanksgiving dinners! YEAH!

Edited to Add: We Won!

Twilight saga: New Moon

by Becca

NEW MOON.

So, if you’ve been around me at all, you know that I’m NOT a fan of Jacob in the Twilight books. I viewed him as competition for Edward and really, it’s the fact that I would have chosen Edward for me (as well as Bella) so i didn’t like him. I felt he was too young and immature, even after the change I still saw it.

Trina and I went to the theater yesterday to catch a matinee.

I ran up to the door only to find out the first four showings were all sold out. Bummer. The irony in this is that I didn’t check to see if they were sold out first. So we bought tickets to the 4:30 showing and I went with Trina to do her grocery shopping and then came back.

12144_668857188055_38402878_37997748_7623353_n

We both got popcorn and Trina gave in to a drink for the collector’s cup. We waited in line for probably a hour and a half and they had us roped off. Trina had gone to the midnight premiere and said it had been chaos. Let’s just say, they have 16 screens and ALL 16 screens were sold out for the midnight premiere, INSANE!

12144_668857193045_38402878_37997749_7474896_n

When the let us in, I ran in and we got pretty good seats. I have to say the crowd did not disappoint. Part of the lure of a midnight showing is that the fans are actually into the movie and have good interaction. The people sitting beside of us were definitely doing that and at one point Trina heard someone yell “Cheater” when Bella and Jacob almost kissed.

Next summer I WILL be going to midnight showing and I will again for Breaking Dawn. I will say that I do like Jacob better in the movies, it reminded me that I didn’t completely start hating him until Eclipse and so we’ll see what happens in that movie for me.

Overall, I think this movie was great!

On a side note, some people are really NOT into this series at all. One of my friends on facebook actually threatened to de-friend the next person who posted about New Moon and apparently she kept her word. I think that if it bothers you that much, just ignore it, unless you REALLY don’t like your friend anymore because of it.

Movie Recomendations

by Becca

So I watch a lot of movies. A LOT of movies. We have Netflix and I take full advantage of it every month. I usually get in at least two rentals a week. That’s at least 8 movies a month. For only $15. So yeah, great deals! I also take advantage of the instant viewing online.

The point being, I’m going to share with you some of my recent favorites.
60003759

Songcatcher was a movie recommended to me by a college professor. With my first degree I minored in American Music and had to take a class in American Music. This movie came up because we talked about old ballads that came over and stayed alive via oral tradition.

Gray watched this with me and we were both delighted by the music. Not only is there a shining young star to be (Emmy Rossum pre-Phantom of the Opera) but the story line is refreshing. I enjoyed every minute of the movie.

The Ugly Truth is not in my genre of movies I typically like, but it starred Katherine Heigl who is one of my favorite actresses, so I gave it a shot. I was not disappointed! Heigl plays a television news producer who has trouble hooking guys because of her type A personality (Hello SELF!). Along comes a guy (Gerald Butler) who is pretty much the opposite of her “type” to show her how to successfully hook a guy and keep him.

As I said, it’s not my typical movie, but I really enjoyed it despite that.

Today I will be watching New Moon so hopefully I will have a review of that up in the next day or two!

Hmm maybe that’s why my eyes have been hurting…

by Becca

I’ve noticed, for a while now, that my eyes were bothering me. I first noticed it back in the spring when I had to take a scantron (bubble sheet) test in Sociology. I could barely focus on the bubbles and had to close my left eye to do so. It went away for a while and then this fall it has gradually gotten worse.

We made an appointment to visit the eye doctor at Wal-mart for Friday afternoon. Yes, I know it’s Wal-mart but that doesn’t mean they aren’t licensed optometrists! The lady who saw me was very sweet and like-able. I told her my issues and that I had a lazy eye (born with it, thanks mom!) and that I had previously worn glasses. Yes, I wore glasses from the age of four until maybe fifth grade? I inherited an eye disease from my mother that they caught early enough to fix. I have pretty good vision, but lately it had been hard to focus when reading.

It turns out that, yes, I’ve been straining my eyes a lot and that I need glasses for when I read anything for more than ten minutes.

So I got to pick out a pair of frames and we ordered me some glasses.

I feel like such a dork.

I don’t have to wear them all the time, but I can if I want to. They are made for anytime I am reading for more than ten minutes, so school, work, anything like that.

They will be bifocals, which means that they cover several things in one lens. My distance vision needed a little help so the top of the lens covers that, while the middle/lower focuses finely for me to be able to read up close.

I’m not sure how I feel about it, because in this situation, I’m kind of stuck. See, it’s not a case where contacts are necessary because my vision isn’t horrible, I just can’t focus well up close anymore.

Sigh.

So in a week or two I will have glasses and while it does make me feel sort of studious, kind of like a sexy librarian.

Kidding!

Pictures to come once I get them.
