The Great Flood of Tennessee 2010

by Becca

So, yesterday morning Gray and I headed into work. We knew it was going to rain and possible tornadic activity, but hey, we need money to pay bills so we went.

The first signs we had that this storm might be BIG was from the Sanborns in Memphis, Gray’s parents. They called later in our shift and were talking about tornado sirens and flooding… LOTS of flooding. Like so much flooding in Jackson that people were being rescued from their homes by boat..

Still, I apparently thought that would not come near us because are a text from a friend, I went to the library to study. Passing Pathophysiology is more important to me than being safe, obviously. Caroline and I had been studying for over a hour when the tornado siren on campus went off. We both freaked out, grabbed everything, I went to the bathroom, and then we decided to leave. I was going to the BAS lab because if I was going to be stuck, I’d rather be stuck with people I know! She needed to get home to her kids, so we headed out the door, only to be called back my library employees.

“I HAVE to get home to my kids!” Caroline screamed at the man who insisted we come back. Apparently someone set off the library alarm, so he had to double check to make sure we weren’t book thieves. We weren’t.

The tornado siren is VERY loud throughout the quad, because it bounces off all three buildings and well, loudness ensues… once I got into the building, Gray confirmed over the phone that the tornado was actually 30 miles away, in the Northwest part of our county… so naturally I told him to drive on over to campus, it’s safer here than in our apt, I figured.

We hung out at the lab for probably a hour before I realized, “Hey this is more flooding than anything else, let’s go home!” We drove a friend of ours over to his apt. and then raced home… in the pouring rain. It was exactly like the night I got rear-ended so I was waiting for someone to hit us head on or something, yes I still have issues!

So we made it home and got to watch all sorts of crazy pictures and videos… CRAZINESS.

I actually have a video I took as we watched dinner. It’s a mobile home/school building that falls apart in the “river” which is actually the interstate, completely flooded. Yeah, that was only 30 minutes away from here… a road I drove on every day a few years ago to get to work… our only access to Nashville… awesomeness.

So yeah, major rain, major flooding, and I’m wondering how this will affect finals because we have a LOT of commuters.

You can tell ‘em Joe sent ya.

For Valentine’s, Gray and I went to a murder mystery dinner theatre event on campus last night. It was $10 for the two of us and the food and entertainment was great. BEST VALENTINE’S EVER.

Anyway… I’m not going to say much about it, but here are some pictures I took.

Oh Edmond…

Rosie, Trixie, and Dixie… probably not in that order.

You can’t see very well, but Gray was chosen to be Rosie’s personal assistant. :)

Edmond and Trixie.

One of the men at our table was chosen to be the detective so he had a big role.

Finale!

We had a lot of fun, and I half-solved the mystery. I can’t wait to do more dinner theatre shows!

Finally, two videos of Gray’s role in the show.

Some of the videos I forgot to post.

by Becca

So, since tomorrow is my first day back to classes and I know that my posts will probably decline severely, I am going to share with you some videos I’ve taken over the past month or two… I know you’re excited.

Snow on Christmas Day! from Becca Sanborn on Vimeo.

This is from Christmas day and I warn you, I am very loud and excited.

This was the day Gray ordered his new desktop computers parts (he built his own computer). He was stroking the screen with happiness but did not comply with my videotaping.

This video is hilarious to me. I don’t think you see it at the end, but the cat heard Grady hiss and thought it was Chile and totally ran off to the side. Chile the cat killer!

Fireworks in downtown Nashville

by Becca

For the 4th, Gray’s parents and brother came up to Murfreesboro to hang out with us for the weekend. We gathered up in the van with Chad and Trina and drove to downtown Nashville to see their fireworks/music/4th of July extravaganza. We ended up getting there are 1:30 in the afternoon and the fireworks weren’t scheduled until 9pm. Obviously we had a lot of waiting to do.

Nashville’s display is ranked pretty high in the nation so we knew the all day camp out to watch them was worthy of our time.

We found a really good spot and spread out some blankets to stake our claim. There had been some discussion about coolers because the official websites said they weren’t allowed. We ended up getting ours out of the van because there were definitely coolers everywhere!

There were some fun things to do, like inflatables and walking around downtown. They also had a misting tent (my favorite part, it was HOT!) and freebies like ice cream… which helped in the tremendous heat. Trina and I actually stayed under umbrellas for a few hours because of the heat. Who cares about a tan, I just want to stay alive!

Then came the rain… we were prepared with umbrellas and ponchos and the first rain wasn’t so bad. It cleared up and we could hear a few of the performers  (none of which I knew) while we waited. Sam showed up around 7:15 and by then it was getting so packed, she couldn’t find the stairs to come down to us! Once she got down to us, it was time for a last minute bathroom break. The port-a-potties were available but by this time we had realized that the restauraunts were much better. After a 15 minute wait, we made it into one and out. Of course, we realized we had to fight our way back down to our seat. Let’s just say, we all brought out the guns… we’re not really mean people unless we have to be… So Sam, Trina, and I fought our way back, not without a few people cussing us out and Sam had to push a child away from us. I’m pretty sure Trina was groped in the process. hah.

We made it back to our seats just in time. Wynona Judd had just finished and since it was about to rain AGAIN, they decided to go ahead and light the fireworks. Gray and I captured a small taste of the show to share with you all, it’s from the very beginning. I wish I had captured the finale because it truly captured the idea of being in a war zone, it was insane! For the record, usually the Nashville Sympony  plays live alongside of the fireworks. This year because of the rain, they played beforehand and we listened to a recording.

P.S. – While we were in Nashville, the body of Steve McNair was found, just a few blocks away from where we were. It turned out that we drove past it just as they found his body. We found out before they announced it thanks to the technology of a cell phone. It’s a heart breaking loss for the Tennessee Titans, he took us all the way to the Superbowl back in 1999, the only time we’ve ever been.  Please keep his family and friends in your prayers and thoughts as they mourn him in this horrible tragedy.

Happy Independence Day!

by Becca

I’ve been really nostalgic about the 4th of July this year. I think it’s because I’m more aware of what is going on with our country and world. I am thankful for all that I have… a wonderful husband, family, friends, and a nation in which I can choose to do whatever I want to as a career. I can worship God without being persecuted, unlike some countries where they would kill me for doing so.

There are many women and men who fight daily to keep our freedom secure and we don’t thank them nearly enough.

So thank you to anyone who is a Veteran, anyone who is currently in the military, especially those who are deployed. Thank you for doing your job so I can enjoy fireworks with my family and friends today. Thank you!

Today’s post is brought to you by Gray’s cousins. They launched rockets yesterday and I filmed the process. Video one is the first attempt and video two is the actual successful launch.
